CARIBBEAN BEAT FEATURE

Bajan songstress Kellie Cadogan oozes charm on this album, with songs that flirt with the sonic qualities of soul-jazz and gospel. This long-in-gestation project includes half of the ten-song album composed by Cadogan, who, with these tunes, displays an ear for contemporary popular songcraft. You can make a range of comparisons: from the sound of a reborn Anita Baker to an intimate acoustic Ella Fitzgerald duet. Songwriting and performance aside, Believe acts as a calling card for a performer who can thrill with a voice that signifies more than just a tropical hotel lounge entertainer, but a singer in touch with a wider palette of sounds. The title tune hangs on a set of lyrics that reflect a positivity and faith that act as a kind of spiritual testimony. The juxtaposition of these original songs — uplifting odes all — and twentieth-century jazz standards makes this album an interesting listen, and a pleasant reminder that Caribbean singers stride many worlds effortlessly.

There are not many places you’ll find a performer confident and skilled enough to follow in the footsteps of the first lady of song. But at the Hilton on Thursday night, Kellie Cadogan proved Barbados was just that. Her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, part of the Honey Jazz Festival, showed the island’s talent is rich and deep. Cadogan’s love of music percolated through the night air. Like Fitzgerald, her performance is exuberant, uplifting and very smooth. She took on some of Fitzgerald’s best known songs, as well as an outstanding rendition of Sunshine of Your Love, the rocky blues number originally by British rock group Cream.

All of Me and the Gershwin number Summertime were given the Ella Fitzgerald treatment. The latter was elevated from a jazz standard to something out of the ordinary.

STORY BY Cheryl Harewood of EAGY MAGAZINE

New Year. New album. New dreams. New beginnings. These words more or less sum up the trajectory that

contemporary inspirational artiste, producer, teacher and music coach Kellie Cadogan is currently on.

Hers has always been a life of seeing the goodness of God manifest in some amazing ways, and as she launches her new album, titled, Intimate Journey tonight at 8, at the Grand Salle of the Central Bank, Kellie is quite aware that this launch is in actuality, a move of God – signed, sealed and delivered by Him.

Speaking to Easy, a few days ago, Kellie shared, “From 2018, God was giving me music and was telling me to produce my own music. The launching of this album is a strategic move of God. I am simply stepping into obedience. In August, God told me to release songs on January 1 (2023). I remember thinking to myself that would be just perfect as it would be exactly two years from the date I did the first song and video release Spirit of God.
